We are all aware of the dangers of Legionella in cooling towers, and the biocide cost to have ‘clean’ systems.
However, if you have a cooling water system, you know there are many additional factors that need to be considered in relation to controlling Legionella in cooling towers.
Oxidising Biocides such as Chlorine and Bromine, among others, are used extensively for the control of bacteria populations in cooling water systems.
However, uncontrolled or overdosing of Oxidising Biocides can provide the conditions for rapid active corrosion on system metals. Oxidising Biocides have a burning action which requires intimate contact with the biomass. Therefore, thicknesses of biomass can provide a protective layer for underlying bacterial populations.
In order to reduce this biomass, the Oxidising Biocide levels are often increased which can cause excess levels on metals that don’t have high biomass contamination. This can lead to active corrosion sites.
Non Oxidising Biocides
Alternatively, Non Oxidising Biocides have a much longer lingering effect
maintaining a residual following any interruptions to dosing.
Non Oxidising Biocides have a much greater capacity to penetrate bio-films (biomass) and inhibit the growth functions of the bacteria. Non Oxidising Biocides also have a much higher level of compatibility with corrosion & scale inhibitors and dispersants than Oxidising Biocides.
